Today, Burgundy is known all over the world for the prestigious wines and the gastronomy. However, at the beginning of the second Millenium, Burgundy earned its reputation for its spiritual influence throughout Europe. In these days, the Abbey of Cluny was the religious centre of Europe, and many “daughters of Cluny”(other abbeys under the influence of Cluny)  were built everywhere, particularly in Southern Burgundy.

Chalon sur Saône Print E-mail

Chalon sur Saône is the second biggest city of Burgundy (after Dijon) and is the most important city in Southern Burgundy. Chalon is certainly not the biggest in number of inhabitants, as the total number of inhabitants is just over 50.000. The city is situated along the river Saône.

La Roche de Solutré Print E-mail
Dominating the vineyards, this Rock is one of the most famous places in Southern Burgundy and is a real eye catcher in the Mâconnais region. If it weren’t for the vineyards, one could think that the Roche de Solutré had been taken out of the American wild west. Even if the Rock itself is spectacular enough to become famous, former French president François Mitterand contributed a great deal to its reputation. Every Pentecost, he climbed the Roche de Solutré together with some of his followers…and all the television stations of the country!
