On the banks of the Saône, Chalon sur Saône is a pretty city whose old town is organised around its cathedral. The Place Saint Vincent, which faces the cathedral, is lined with half-timbered houses. On Sunday and Friday mornings there is a market. The rest of the time, cafés and restaurants occupy this lively square. In the middle of the Saône, a small island shelters numerous restaurants. On the quays, there is a museum of photography in homage to Nicéphore Niepce, inventor of photography. Every year, on the third weekend of July, Chalon comes alive with the sound of the street theatre festival “Chalon dans la Rue”. For 4 days, dozens of street performances take place in the four corners of the city. Chalon sur Saône is only 20 kilometres from the campsite Château de l’Epervière.
