Tournus, history and gastronomy on the banks of the Saône

A few minutes from the campsite, on the banks of the Saône, awaits the pretty town of Tournus. This charming little town is dominated by the towers of its imposing Saint-Philibert abbey church. This church, built in the 10th century, is a masterpiece of Romanesque art. However, it is not the only asset of Tournus. The town is also one of Burgundy’s top gastronomic destinations. It has two Michelin-starred restaurants as well as several other very good restaurants.

Cluny Abbey, the jewel of medieval Christianity in the heart of Burgundy

Built in the 10th century, Cluny Abbey was the largest and most prestigious abbey in the western world. It extended its influence over the whole of Europe with more than 1000 priories under its authority. Unfortunately, Cluny Abbey did not survive the French Revolution, during which it was heavily damaged. Its remains are still impressive enough and a visit to them allows you to imagine the gigantic size of the place. Especially since 3D digital views offer a perfect reconstruction of what was once this colossal monument.

The Château de Pierreclos is a magnificent castle that originated in the 9th century under the influence of the Abbey of Cluny. Located about 10 km west of Mâcon, some 50 minutes drive from Camping Château de l’Epervière, the castle offers an entertaining historical tour for the whole family. Some very good wines are produced at the château: red Burgundy, Mâcon-Pierreclos, Saint-Véran or the mythical Pouilly-Fuissé.

Louhans and its Monday morning market

The 400-metre-long Grand’ Rue de Louhans is lined with 15th-century houses and 157 arcades. Although it alone justifies a visit to this small town in the heart of Bresse Bourguignonne, it is on Monday mornings that you should visit Louhans. Every Monday morning, one of the largest markets in France is held there. This market, whose origins date back to the 13th century, specialises in poultry. It must be said that you are here in Bresse and that the Bresse poultry is the only poultry to benefit from an AOC! This justifies a market!

The Solutré rock stands proudly among the undulating landscapes of the Mâconnais. Its stone silhouette stands out from the expanse of vines. A pathway allows you to easily reach its summit from where you can enjoy magnificent panoramic views of southern Burgundy and the Beaujolais mountains. Solutré is also a major archaeological site. Traces of human habitation dating back 57,000 years can be found here. You can visit its interpretation centre to learn about the lives of our ancestors. The Roche de Solutré is situated some 60 kilometres from the campsite Château de l’Epervière.

On the banks of the Saône, Chalon sur Saône is a pretty town whose old town is organised around its cathedral. The Place Saint Vincent, which faces the cathedral, is lined with half-timbered houses. On Sundays and Friday mornings, there is a market. The rest of the time, cafés and restaurants occupy this lively square. In the middle of the Saône, there is a small island with many restaurants. On the quays, there is a museum of photography in homage to Nicéphore Niepce, inventor of photography. Every year, on the third weekend of July, Chalon comes alive with the sound of the street theatre festival “Chalon dans la Rue”. For 4 days, dozens of street shows take place in the four corners of the city. Chalon sur Saône is only 20 kilometres from the Château de l’Epervière campsite.

A city of art and history, Dijon is a magnificent city. Its historic centre is home to numerous monuments and palaces with glazed roofs which bear witness to the glorious past of this city which was the capital of the Dukes of Burgundy. The district surrounding the Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy has retained its medieval character and the Museum of Fine Arts is one of the most beautiful in France. Dijon is 95km from camping Château de l’Epervière.

To the south of the Côte de Beaune and to the north of the Mâconnais, the Côte Chalonnaise extends its vineyards over 25 kilometres. In the heart of these hilly landscapes are produced delicious red and white wines. Among the most renowned appellations, one finds notably Givry, Mercurey, Montagny or Rully. Less prestigious than the Côte des Beaune or Côte de Nuits, these appellations are also cheaper and offer some very nice surprises. So take the time to taste some of these wines at the winegrowers’ while enjoying the beautiful landscapes dotted with charming villages (Buxy, Montagny, Givry, etc.).
